Why Do Songs Sometimes Fade Out Instead of Ending?

You know the ending, the music keeps playing. Then slowly…it disappears.

The fade-out became popular partly because it allows a song to feel like it could continue beyond the recording.

Instead of giving you a definite ending, it leaves the music moving away.

It's also useful when a repeated section works musically but doesn't have a natural final ending.

So sometimes the song doesn't really “end.”

It simply stops letting you hear it.
