Why Do DJs Use Headphones With One Ear?

Watch a DJ closely and you'll often see one ear covered and the other uncovered.

It looks strange but there's a reason.

• The DJ is listening to two things at once.

• One ear can monitor the music currently playing to the audience.

• The other can listen to the next track they're preparing.

This helps them match timing, rhythm and other elements before bringing the new track into the mix.

So when you see a DJ holding one side of their headphones against their ear, they're not just listening to music.

They're listening to two moments at once.
