Why Do Airports Make You Walk So Far?

Sometimes it feels like the gate is deliberately as far away from the entrance as physically possible but airports aren't simply trying to make passengers walk.
Airports are enormous systems that have to move people through security, shops, restaurants, waiting areas and different gates.
The journey also creates opportunities for commercial areas between security and the gate and then there is another factor:
Airports are designed around aircraft movement, safety, baggage systems and enormous passenger flows — not around making every gate five minutes from the entrance.
So that long walk is partly inconvenience, partly logistics, and sometimes a very profitable walk through the building.
