Someone does something once.
Others copy it.
Nobody questions it.
Children see adults doing it.
Businesses adapt around it.
Eventually the original reason disappears. The behavior remains. At that point, people can honestly believe it has always been done that way.
Traditions don't always begin with a ceremony. Sometimes they begin with one person improvising.
